The Päijät-Häme district court decided over the weekend to remand a middle-aged man from Pieksämäki in custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The man is 55 years old and lives in the vicinity of the crime scene.

He has a background in criminal proceedings, having previously been accused of theft, drink-driving and assault, among other things.

Police received an alert on Thursday, 18 June, of a brawl that broke out on Kuopionkie in Pieksämäki. Authorities who arrived at the scene found several people, and one of them had sustained serious injuries from a bladed weapon.

The police patrol immediately began resuscitation, and emergency medical services continued resuscitation attempts. However, the victim did not survive.

Investigating officer Satu Seppä describes the situation as complex. Police are aware of the main course of events, but the investigation continues. The charges include attempted manslaughter and assault, and others are suspected of involvement. They have been released following questioning.
