Police opened fire at the end of 122-kilometre pursuit in Pyhäntä

According to Iltalehti.fi, police shot at a fleeing vehicle in Pyhäntä on Saturday 10 October. The information is contained in a recent statement from the Prosecutor's Office.

The situation began in Piippola in Siikalatvla, where police attempted to stop the vehicle driver for a sobriety check. The driver refused to stop and fled the scene. The car's speed reached nearly 250 kilometres per hour at its worst, and the total distance of the chase amounted to 122 kilometres.

The speeding caused significant danger to other traffic. Police pursued the fleeing driver with multiple patrols from Oulu and Eastern Finland – from Oulu alone, five police vehicles were involved.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle twice using spike strips, but the driver evaded the obstacle both times: the first time by making a U-turn and the second time by driving around it through a ditch.

On Road 28 in Pyhäntä, police ultimately shot at the vehicle. The situation ended when the driver gave up and stopped the vehicle himself.

A drugs screening test administered to the driver showed he had used intoxicating medication. He also had no valid driving licence. The vehicle was seized.

The man is suspected of dangerous driving, drink-driving and driving a vehicle without authorisation. The National Prosecutor's Office is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident in accordance with the Pre-trial Investigation Act. According to preliminary information, no personal injuries occurred in the situation.
