Central Finland Police arrested a man on Wednesday who had evaded approximately one and a half years of imprisonment for over six months. The man had escaped from prison and evaded authorities for one and a half years.

A patrol approached a building in West Tampere early in the evening where the man was believed to be. However, he noticed the arrival of the authorities and fled the scene. The area was difficult terrain: tall grass and dense vegetation offered ideal conditions for concealment.

Aerial assistance was requested. An officer operating a drone flew the device over the search area for approximately one hour. Eventually, the camera image identified the man concealed in a shrub near the location from which he had originally fled.

The drone operator guided the ground patrol to the correct spot. The arrest proceeded peacefully, and the man made no further resistance.

Commissioner Jani Mäkilä states that aerial support is often used in police operations. In this situation it was particularly useful, as without it the individual might not have been located.
