Central Finland Police apprehended a man who had been sought for over six months. He had previously been sentenced to one-and-a-half years in prison. Authorities used a drone to assist in West Tampere on Wednesday.
A patrol arrived at the property in the early evening. The suspect was not inside, and it occurred to the authorities that he had noticed their arrival and fled.
The search continued from the air. About an hour later, the device located the man in the middle of high grass and dense vegetation near the first location. According to Commissioner Jani Mäkilä, the area was difficult terrain, and the fugitive would not necessarily have been apprehended without the aerial unit.
The officer operating the drone directed the other patrol officers to the location. During the apprehension, the man surrendered without resistance. He was taken to serve the remainder of his sentence.
According to Mäkilä, the use of drones is not unusual for police. In this situation it was deployed because there were signs that the suspect had left the location just before the authorities arrived.
