Corrosive drain cleaner was poured on an 8-year-old child on Sunday evening at the grounds of Variska school in Ristinummi, Vaasa. The incident occurred around 7 p.m., and police were notified by the emergency centre. There were numerous young people on the school grounds at the time of the incident.
The child suffered severe injuries from the act, and was transported by ambulance urgently to hospital care. Police apprehended the suspects shortly after the incident. One person was arrested on suspicion of the crime. The other suspect is under 15 years old. Police are investigating the incident as aggravated assault.
The following day, police found two pipe bombs in a state of readiness to explode on the Variska school grounds. The patrol unit present made the pipe bombs safe.
Ostrobothnia police emphasise that homemade chemical bombs are extremely dangerous. Their manufacture and handling pose a serious risk of injury. Acidic or alkaline liquids can cause severe chemical burns when splashed, and an exploding bottle can shatter into sharp fragments.
Police urge parents to discuss the serious consequences of such experiments with young people.
