The District Court of South-Western Finland rejected on Wednesday the claims made by a woman against her own son at a well-known family business in Salo. The woman had demanded over 400,000 euros in wages and insurance contributions, but the court determined that the employer had a valid basis for terminating her employment.
The dispute originated from an ownership change in 2015, when the mother stepped down as chief executive and the son took over management. The daughter was appointed to lead the board; the parents remained on the company's payroll. Dismissals of the parents a couple of years ago led the mother to take the matter to court.
According to the court's decision, the woman no longer performed the role of personnel and administrative manager that she claimed to hold after 2017. Her access to the company's accounts had been removed, and the court found that other employees carried out the practical operational tasks.
During the proceedings, other company employees were also heard as witnesses. CCTV footage was reviewed, and on the basis of that material, the woman had taken documents with her from areas to which she had no business access. In its 34-page ruling, the district court considered this a significant breach for the employer.
The details of the judgment also reveal that police have investigated the woman's conduct at the company. The matter has proceeded to prosecution review. In place of a payment to the woman, she must pay the company over 32,000 euros in legal costs. The decision may be appealed to the court of appeal, as it is not yet final.
