A man in his fifties took his primary school-age child on a weekend trip to Pyhtää municipality, situated approximately 110 kilometres from Helsinki. According to the assessment of the local police, the act was premeditated, but the man halted the alleged murder attempt himself and called for help at the scene.

According to Helsingin Sanomat, police suspect that the act was premeditated. According to preliminary information from the investigation, the man stopped the act of violence of his own accord and subsequently called the emergency centre to report his location. Police arrested him at the scene immediately after the act.

The incident occurred just one week after a court had granted custody of the child to the mother. Following this, the father was granted the right to visit the child.
