Two people, approximately 30 years old, died on Helsinki's Itäväylä on the night of 30 June when a Taksi Helsinki vehicle struck them down. The driver was a forty-year-old man.
Crime Commissioner Tuomas Lindholm stated that according to the assessment of the authorities, the driver was travelling slightly faster than permitted. "We are not talking about any gross speeding," he said. According to Lindholm, no other significant anomalies have emerged in the driving.
At the accident site near Kulosaari, the speed limit is 70 km/h. The news was first published by Ilta-Sanomat.
The man remains in police custody. He is suspected of two counts of aggravated causing death by negligence, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, and aggravated drink-driving. According to the authorities' assessment, he was under the influence of alcohol. A preliminary breath test result was obtained at the time of arrest, but the official toxicology test results have not yet been completed.
The driver has previously stated that the collision occurred unexpectedly.
Both victims, a man and a woman, died immediately. According to Lindholm, they knew each other previously, but information about their exact relationship is not available. The driver did not know them.
After the collision, the man who fled was traced in the early morning to his car in a car park at Itäkeskus.
According to police, the victims were on the carriageway at the time of the accident. The reason for this is still under investigation, but Lindholm reminded that there is no reason to be on the carriageway.
