A former daycare property caught fire on Tuesday evening in Atala, Tampere. Central Finland police say the fire is being investigated as a deliberate act.
The alarm was sent to the rescue service shortly before 19:30 on Pulkkakatu. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found fire spreading along the entire length of the building. Flames reached the eaves across a large area.
The property was approximately 700 square metres. The building had already been taken out of use previously. Over 20 units and around 70 rescue professionals participated in the firefighting effort. The fire was brought under control at ten o'clock in the evening, but the damage was extensive. The flames remained largely confined to one third of the building, but the entire property suffered significant damage.
No personal injuries occurred. The rescue service issued a warning in the evening about dangerous smoke that had spread to the surrounding area. Residents were advised to close off ventilation and remain indoors. K-Market Atala was forced to close temporarily. The danger zone included residential areas on the north side of Lahdentic, such as Atala, Tasanne and Kumpula. At 21:17, it was announced that the smoke no longer posed a threat.
According to police, the preliminary investigation has only just begun.
