International police cooperation has exposed extensive networks in which people are guided to commit serious sexual offences. According to Yle, the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom and Europol revealed an operation in which numerous suspected perpetrators and victims across different countries have been identified.
The investigation has identified over 150 people who have either been exploited or participated in the offences. In most cases, the victim has been the perpetrator's life partner or romantic partner.
Online groups operate in which both image material and practical instructions are shared. In these communities, advice is given on how to render a victim unconscious or incapable of resisting. The aim is to commit sexual violence without the victim being able to defend themselves or remember the event afterwards.
The operation has led to numerous new investigations across the world. Authorities warn that the phenomenon is more widespread than previously known.
