30,000-euro bank transfer threatened with airsoft gun in apartment block courtyard

According to Ilta-Sanomat, two young men robbed a 20-year-old Ylöjärvi resident and acquaintance of 30,000 euros in June 2025. The victim had received more than 38,000 euros in life insurance compensation following his father's death, and word of the money spread through their circle of friends.

The crime took place in the courtyard of a local apartment block. The perpetrators, who were 21 and 23 years old at the time, took possession of the victim's mobile phone. According to the victim's account, the 21-year-old was carrying a weapon with which he threatened him. The other man then transferred 30,000 euros via online banking to his own account.

Pirkanmaa District Court found the threat with a weapon proven. An airsoft pistol was later found in the countryside, which police said had been thrown into the woods from the getaway car.

Dispute over car damage led to robbery

The robbery had been preceded by a long-running dispute. The 23-year-old demanded 33,000 euros from the victim, claiming that the victim's mother was responsible for damage to his car. According to the victim, the situation had started when his mother had ordered the intoxicated 23-year-old out of the garage. The 23-year-old had subsequently driven into a barrier located about one kilometre away.

The 23-year-old told police that the damage had later been settled with monetary compensation, but no specific sum had been discussed. The prosecutor and the court did not regard the claim as justification for taking the money. According to the court, the men knew specifically that the victim had insurance money from his father's death in his account.

Money quickly dispersed to multiple accounts

Following the robbery, the funds were quickly transferred to several different accounts. According to the preliminary investigation, withdrawals and transfers were made from the account, and some of the money went to other accounts before being withdrawn in cash.

However, police managed to recover 28,887 euros for the victim. The remaining 1,113 euros, which the district court ordered the two men to compensate to the victim jointly and severally with interest.

Sentences

The 23-year-old was sentenced to one year and six months unconditional imprisonment for robbery, unlawful threats and theft. The 21-year-old received the same length conditional prison sentence for robbery plus 80 hours of community service.
