On Saturday, 4 July, a head-on collision cost the life of a 44-year-old motorist on Chemin du Marquis in Orange, in the Vaucluse. The 22-year-old man at the wheel of the all-terrain vehicle was placed in provisional custody. The magistrate of Carpentras opened an investigation into aggravated vehicular homicide, assault and battery, and endangering the lives of others.
A witness indicated that the SUV was being driven dangerously, crossing the centre line and struck a small car head-on. Emergency services were unable to save the 44-year-old man from Orange. His 32-year-old partner, seriously injured, was evacuated by helicopter to Marseille.
On board the 4x4, four guests were returning from a wedding organised in the surrounding area. Two of them left before the intervention of the fire service. Toxicological testing of the young driver revealed the presence of cannabis in his blood.
