Deliberate arson at Tournefeuille secondary school
A 14-year-old adolescent has been sentenced to 140 hours of community service for starting a fire at Léonard-de-Vinci secondary school in Tournefeuille (Haute-Garonne) on 6 October, according to ouest-france.fr. The fourth-year pupil admitted to enquirers that he was responsible for the fire that broke out shortly after 4 p.m. "I didn't imagine the damage, nor the risks…", he stated during questioning.
The rows of small fir trees surrounding the school had caught fire, then the flames reached a gas pipe and classrooms. Approximately 200 pupils still present at the site were evacuated urgently, as well as a few neighbours. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control despite the intensity of the flames. The school remained closed for one day for cleaning and clearance operations.
Identified by officers from the property crimes unit, the young suspect was presented to the juvenile prosecutor's office. The connection between this fire and the secondary school blockades organised in parallel was not confirmed. A ban on demonstrating was added to the sentence. The Haute-Garonne Department announced its intention to file a complaint.
