Suspect charged following teenager's death in Gironde

According to sudouest.fr, a 30-year-old man was charged on Sunday 11 October with murder and remanded in custody. He is suspected of shooting a 16-year-old teenager, named Rico, in Saint-Louis-de-Montferrand, a commune located approximately twenty kilometres from Bordeaux.

The suspect denied the charges during his police detention and exercised his right to silence before the investigating magistrate. Several weapons were seized during a search of his home, which followed his arrest on Friday.

Circumstances of the tragedy

On Thursday at around 2 p.m., walkers alerted gendarmes after hearing gunshots near the Garonne riverbank, close to the Jourdane slipway. The officers discovered Rico's body bearing a bullet wound to the head. A young girl of the same age, present at the scene, was in a state of shock.

The pathologist found two openings in the skull. An autopsy confirmed death by firearm, according to public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul. Gendarmes from the investigations section in Bordeaux-Bouliac conducted the enquiry, which led to the arrest of the suspect, described as a neighbour of the victim.

Reactions and next steps

The municipal council is organising a silent march "in memory of Rico" on Tuesday 13 October at 5.15 p.m., departing from the town hall square towards the scene of the tragedy. The municipality expressed its support to the teenager's family and loved ones. The investigation will continue under the authority of an investigating judge.

This violent death provoked a strong emotional response in the small Gironde commune.
