A 37-year-old man employed at the detention centre in Varces-Allières-et-Risset was brought before magistrates at Grenoble courthouse. Fresh out of prison personnel training college, he had only about twelve months' service when he began smuggling prohibited packages to inmates.
According to information reported by Le Dauphiné Libéré (source), the story began in late 2021 with a batch of pasta. This first package opened the way to a far larger operation. Over one year, the defendant admitted to having smuggled across the prison fences close to ten kilogrammes of cannabis resin, around forty mobile phones, a games console, tobacco, toiletries, razors, electric toothbrushes and performance-enhancing products.
At the hearing, the defendant admitted to the facts. He estimated his earnings at 10,000 euros, whilst downplaying this amount before the court. The judges were to rule on this case of corruption within a remand prison, which raises questions about personnel control procedures and the detection of contraband items in detention.
This trial illustrates the difficulties encountered by the prison administration in stemming illicit supply networks that benefit certain inmates, including when the intermediaries are members of the surveillance staff.
