Prison assault in Besançon: three inmates sentenced to custodial sentences
A 28-year-old inmate, convicted of rape, was beaten by around ten fellow prisoners at Besançon jail in early May. Three assailants received custodial sentences of 27 to 30 months.

According to France Info, a 28-year-old inmate, convicted of rape, was violently assaulted on 3 May 2026 at Besançon prison in the Doubs.
The assault took place in the exercise area. The young man had refused to join a group of fellow inmates who were calling him over. Several of them then turned against him and hit him with punches and kicks, around ten inmates taking part in the assault.
The injuries sustained resulted in total work incapacity (ITT) of 20 days. The victim told police he had been called a "snitch" by his attackers — a term used in prison circles to designate inmates convicted of sexual offences. He chose not to file a complaint.
Identified by CCTV, three men sentenced this week
Several assailants were able to be identified thanks to the prison establishment's CCTV system. They were brought before a judge late in the week.
Three of them admitted to delivering blows. They were sentenced to custodial sentences of between 27 and 30 months. Three other defendants requested additional time to prepare their defence. A seventh suspect returned to his cell without being troubled.
