Around 1 a.m. in the night of Friday 10 to Saturday 11 July, a 19-year-old woman was leaving her university accommodation in Aix-en-Provence when she was kidnapped. The incident took place in the Bouches-du-Rhône department.

Law enforcement authorities quickly apprehended a 47-year-old suspect. He was placed in provisional detention on the morning of Saturday 11 July, pending the continuation of judicial proceedings. The charges brought against him include kidnapping, unlawful confinement and sexual assault. The local prosecutor's office opened a judicial investigation.

The accused has a serious criminal record. In 2013, the courts handed him an 18-year prison sentence for crimes of the same type. After serving his full sentence, he was released on 6 June, approximately five weeks before the new offences with which he is charged.
