Grenoble's criminal court has judged a former officer at Varces prison, found guilty of fuelling trafficking within the detention facility. He has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment, two of which are suspended.
The accused, newly qualified from the National School of Prison Administration, began working at the facility in 2022. His early days were marked by the introduction of a package of pasta, a first step towards far more serious offences. Over the following months, he smuggled into the prison nearly ten kilograms of cannabis resin, around forty mobile phones, as well as cigarettes, hygiene products, foodstuffs, gaming consoles and performance-enhancing substances. In exchange, he is said to have received approximately 10,000 euros.
The investigation was triggered following an anonymous tip-off. Police then set up surveillance operations which allowed them to observe on several occasions the handing over of bags intended for detainees. Prisoners holding auxiliary positions then took charge of the internal redistribution of the goods.
The facts once again illustrate the difficulty faced by correctional institutions in stemming internal trafficking, despite the security measures in place.
