Paris Court of Appeal validated on Monday 6 July the transmission of the case to the special assize court. The defendant, a 39-year-old man from Cameroon, will have to answer for the death of Yvan Colonna, which occurred in custody.

The facts date back to 2 March 2022, at the Arles correctional facility. The prisoner of Corsican nationality, sentenced to life imprisonment for shooting prefect Claude Érignac in 1998, had been violently assaulted by a fellow inmate. He died on 21 March 2022 as a result of the blows received.

Two judges had decided in April to refer the case to the court specialising in terrorism. The counsel for the accused appealed against this decision, challenging both the terrorist nature of the acts and the murder charge.

The appellate chamber rejected these arguments. The trial will therefore take place before the special formation, reserved for the most serious crimes affecting national security.
