Maëva was only 15 years old on the evening of 14 July 2016 when Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, driving a 19-tonne truck, ploughed into the crowd gathered on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice to watch the fireworks. Ten years later, this young woman, who was not physically injured, recounts the difficulties she encountered in recovering after this trauma, according to franceinfo.
"Psychologically, it changed everything," she confides. She evokes the sense of illegitimacy she long felt as a psychological victim, having suffered no physical injuries unlike the 86 people killed and more than 450 wounded.
The terrorist attack profoundly marked the young girl. She describes how this event transformed her life and how she had to learn to live with the psychological aftermath of this tragedy.
Ten years on, commemorations are taking place on the Côte d'Azur. Republic President Emmanuel Macron was present to pay tribute to the victims. "We have forgotten no name, no face, no story," he declared at the ceremony.
The Nice attack remains one of the bloodiest in French history. The terrorist, a 31-year-old Tunisian, was shot dead by police at the end of his deadly rampage spanning more than two kilometres.
