On Saturday 30 May, an armed altercation broke out in François, Martinique, claiming the life of an 18-year-old teenager and seriously wounding a 30-year-old man. Seven days later, judicial proceedings have advanced: two individuals who assisted the shooter have been tried and convicted, whilst the latter remains at large.
According to an account published by Outre-mer La 1ère, the two convicted men already had criminal records. One of them had harboured the fugitive for several days before the incident. Biological traces linked him to the scene. He admitted to being involved in drug trafficking and possession of a category B weapon, but maintained that he was unaware of his host's murderous intentions. The court sent him to prison for three years and permanently banned him from ever setting foot in France. He had been staying irregularly in the country and was already using a false name in drug-related cases.
The second defendant was caught in the act of picking up the pistol abandoned at the scene. He claimed he wanted to neutralise the weapon to prevent further damage, but admitted to ultimately throwing the object into the ocean, seized by panic. The judge did not believe him: taking into account his criminal history, he received fifteen months' imprisonment with immediate custody, for tampering with a crime scene and transporting a prohibited weapon.
Investigators continue to hunt the main suspect, who has not yet been apprehended.
