The body of an infant was discovered Thursday evening in the river. The child's mother had attempted suicide a few hours earlier.

A child's body was recovered Thursday 28 May from the waters of the Maine in Angers. A paddleboard practitioner made the grim discovery late in the day.
Magistrate Eric Bouillard, Prosecutor of the Republic, indicated that the corpse could be that of a four-day-old newborn who had been missing since the morning. The child's mother had left her home in Avrillé, a commune bordering Angers, at around 4 o'clock in the morning. She subsequently attempted to end her life by jumping from a bridge located in Château-Gontier, in the neighbouring Mayenne department.
According to the prosecutor, the body discovered corresponded in age and size to that of the infant being sought. However, he specified that it was premature to establish certainty and that medical analyses were essential to confirm the identity.
Regarding the circumstances of the death, experts will have to determine whether the child drowned or was already deceased before being thrown into the watercourse.
The mother, seriously wounded during her suicide attempt, is not in a life-threatening condition. Law enforcement, firefighters and gendarmes were mobilised during the day to find the baby, following the opening of an investigation into the worrying disappearance.
