Kim Kardashian Paris heist: eight convicted, jewels never recovered
In October 2016, Kim Kardashian was robbed and bound in her Paris hotel during Fashion Week. Eight of ten defendants were convicted, with sentences of up to three years in prison.
The night of the robbery that changed Kim Kardashian's life
According to France Info, it all began on 28 September 2016, when Kim Kardashian arrived in Paris for Fashion Week, accompanied by her husband, rapper Kanye West, her mother and two of her sisters. Over four days, she attended fashion shows and after-parties, notably alongside stylist Olivier Rousteing, then artistic director of Balmain.
In the night of 2 to 3 October, Kanye West had already returned to the United States. After the Givenchy show and a private party in Azzedine Alaïa's workshop, Kim Kardashian returned to her hotel around one o'clock in the morning. Her mother and sisters left again. She remained alone. The hotel's security relied solely on the night watchman.
Bound, gagged, threatened
Around 2 o'clock in the morning, she sent a message to her followers wishing them "good night". An hour later, noises in the stairwell: two men dressed as police officers burst into her room. Kim Kardashian was gagged and bound. The perpetrators were armed.
They had a specific objective. "The ring", they repeated — the fifteen-carat diamond engagement ring estimated at 4 million dollars, which she regularly displayed on social media. In less than ten minutes, they took 9 million euros' worth of jewellery and fled by bicycle at 3:07 a.m. In the morning, the incident spreads around the world.
A gang of sexagenarians with fatal errors
The Kardashians left Paris in shock, but the investigation progressed rapidly. The robbers made multiple blunders. They ignored the surveillance cameras, which filmed them leaving the scene by bicycle. One of them, who had left on a Vélib' bike with a punctured front tyre, slipped and lost a piece of jewellery in the fall.
Most importantly, they took Kim Kardashian's mobile phone. "How can a criminal make such a stupid mistake?", wondered former police officer Charles Pellegrini, cited by France Info. Four days after the robbery, a first suspect was identified through DNA and placed under surveillance. The rest of the network fell quickly.
The gang members were repeat offenders in their sixties, nicknamed "Old Aomar", "Blue Eyes Didier" and "Slit Nose". Ten men were sent to trial. In May 2025, eight of them were convicted to sentences of up to three years in prison. Kim Kardashian attended the trial in Paris.
A turning point in the star's life
The jewels, however, were never recovered. But the robbery marked a profound turning point in the public trajectory of the star. After a three-month absence from social media — "an eternity" for an influencer of her calibre — Kim Kardashian undergoes a visible transformation.
"It was really a big lesson for me," she declared at the time. "I understood that I should not show certain things that I own." She stopped wearing jewellery in public. Her image became more sober. She began studying law and marketed a perfume made from crystals, which she said had "aided her personal reconstruction".
Fashion journalist Alice Pfeiffer analyses this reversal bluntly: "It is something tangible, terrible, victimising, which will give a tiny bit of authenticity to a girl who is known for doing very little." A personal tragedy that became, paradoxically, a lever of credibility.
