In the early hours of Sunday 5 July 2026, an altercation escalated into an exchange of gunfire in the city centre of Caen. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Place Jean-Letellier, in the Quatrans district.
National police services confirmed that several individuals were struck by bullets. Their condition was not life-threatening at the time of medical treatment. The victims were taken to the university hospital centre in the city to receive care.
The individual who opened fire fled immediately after the incident. Investigators have opened a judicial inquiry and are conducting investigations to identify and apprehend the suspect. Caen's town hall has also been informed of this incident.
