Fatal fire in Carpentras: investigation for murder
According to Actu17, a fire broke out on Tuesday 13 October at around 07:40 in a building in Carpentras, in the Vaucluse. Firefighters extracted a 5-year-old boy, a 35-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl from the property. All three were transported to hospital. The father, 35 years old, found slightly intoxicated outside the building, received only minor treatment.
Two days later, the toll worsened. The girl died on Thursday 15 October from smoke inhalation. The same day, the mother also died. The young boy, although still hospitalised, is no longer in critical condition.
Investigators quickly suspected the father of the family. The Avignon prosecutor's office ordered the opening of a judicial investigation for murder, attempted murder of minors under 15 years of age, murder by a spouse, and intentional destruction by fire. David Dufour, deputy prosecutor of Avignon, specified that "the initial elements of the investigation" were pointing "towards possible responsibility of the father of the family".
Following his police custody period, the father was presented to an investigating judge who decided to examine him. The man denies the facts he is accused of. Technical and scientific police analyses will need to establish the exact circumstances of the fire's origin. The investigation continues under the direction of the investigating magistrate.
