A 45-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody on Saturday following the death of a minor in the commune of Aulnoye-Aymeries. The tragedy occurred during the night of Thursday to Friday, when the 17-year-old victim was celebrating France's qualification for the World Cup.
The magistrate from the Avesnes-sur-Helpe public prosecutor's office, Laurent Dumaine, clarified that the defendant is being prosecuted for involuntary homicide with two aggravating circumstances: driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to assist a person in danger. He has been remanded in custody. The maximum sentence is ten years' imprisonment and 150,000 euros in fines. The person concerned benefits from the presumption of innocence.
The evening had drawn a large crowd to the town centre following France's success against Morocco. The defendant had gone to the location accompanied by acquaintances. The teenage girl was on the rear flatbed of the heavy goods vehicle with other individuals. She is believed to have fallen as the lorry started to move, and was then struck by the vehicle's wheels.
The driver was apprehended immediately and placed in police custody. The Avesnes-sur-Helpe public prosecutor's office had opened a judicial investigation to establish the exact chronology of events.
