On Sunday afternoon, in an area in northern Clermont-Ferrand, a police officer had to use his weapon to stop an individual who was threatening pedestrians with a blade. The perpetrator, a 34-year-old man originally from Sudan, was struck by gunfire before being taken into police custody.
According to statements by magistrate Eric Serfass reported by AFP and confirmed by RTL, the individual had previously attacked several pedestrians. A first officer who attempted to apprehend him was also targeted. It was then that a colleague from the same vehicle decided to use his regulation firearm.
In total, three citizens were struck by the attacker, who was himself struck by police gunfire. The regional newspaper La Montagne reports that all those involved, including the assailant, are no longer in critical danger. The severity of the injuries remains to be assessed, the public prosecutor's office specified.
The prosecutor also revealed that the suspect had previously been convicted by Clermont courts, without specifying the nature of the convictions. Regarding a possible terrorist motivation, Eric Serfass indicated that no evidence currently allowed establishing such a link.
