Paris Court of Appeal upheld Marine Le Pen's conviction for embezzlement of public funds on Tuesday in the case involving European Parliament assistants. The leader of the National Rally nevertheless announced her candidacy for the presidential election while filing a cassation appeal.
Conviction upheld for Marine Le Pen in European Parliament assistants case
Paris Court of Appeal upheld Marine Le Pen's conviction for embezzlement of public funds on Tuesday. The leader of the National Rally was among eleven defendants found guilty in the case involving parliamentary assistants at the European Parliament. The magistrates described the acts as "serious" due to their duration, which extends over more than eleven years.
Despite this judicial decision, the far-right leader announced her candidacy for the presidential election. She also declared that she would file a cassation appeal. This recourse before France's highest court suspends the execution of the sentences handed down against her.
In a statement, Marine Le Pen declared herself "innocent" of the offence she is accused of, although the Court of Appeal validated the guilt of the defendants. The ruling handed down on Tuesday thus confirms the initial conviction in this case of embezzlement of European public funds.
