A 35-year-old father and a 32-year-old mother were remanded in custody following their appearance before the investigating judge, the day after the death of their two infants. According to details provided by franceinfo, the 15-month-old twins were found dead on Monday 29 June in their home in Beuvrages, near Valenciennes.
The conclusions of the investigation indicate that the two young children died as a result of insufficient fluid intake. The Valenciennes public prosecutor's office announced on Thursday 2 July that the two parents had been referred on Wednesday afternoon. They were placed under investigation for medical abandonment by a parent resulting in the death of children under fifteen years of age, before being held in provisional detention.
The judicial authority emphasised that this family had been subject to no previous educational proceedings before the juvenile court. No report concerning their situation had been made to the public prosecutor's magistrates either.
Following the tragedy, the couple's four other children, aged between two and a half and six years old, were taken into care by child protection services.
