A 27-year-old motorist was tried on Tuesday 14 July at Limoges tribunal for a chase with law enforcement dating from 3 June. The tribunal handed down a one-year prison sentence with a suspended sentence, combined with a two-year probationary period with mandatory treatment.
The incidents began around 15:00, at Place Winston-Churchill, in central Limoges. Two national police motorcyclists noticed a Kangoo vehicle with a defective rear light. They attempted to carry out a traffic stop, but the driver refused to comply and accelerated.
The man fled in the opposite direction on the bus lane, then drove onto the boulevards. A rapid response unit from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) took over, whilst another unit positioned itself as a roadblock. The fugitive ran six red lights, three stop signs, and made overtaking manoeuvres in the opposite direction. He struck the police car at the roadblock, tearing off its wing mirror, even though he could have avoided it. His speed was estimated at 140 km/h.
The chase extended across twelve kilometres through the city. The driver, who was apprehended, was not in possession of a driving licence. At the hearing, he explained that he had panicked at the moment of the traffic stop.
The tribunal found the charges of refusing to comply with police, driving without a licence, and damaging a police vehicle to be proven. Despite the dangerous nature of the offences, the court imposed a sentence with a suspended portion, combined with enhanced monitoring.
