According to letribunaldunet.fr, Amine B., 28, first cousin of Nahel Merzouk, has been actively sought by police since a refusal to stop on 1 January in the 19th arrondissement of Paris — whilst driving a vehicle belonging to his aunt, Mounia Merzouk.
On that day, a vehicle refused to stop at a traffic control. Police officers noted the registration plate. Records revealed that the car was registered in the name of Mounia Merzouk, mother of Nahel Merzouk, whose death in June 2023 during a traffic stop triggered riots across France.
Mounia Merzouk summoned, nephew nowhere to be found
Summoned to the police station, Mounia Merzouk acknowledged having lent her vehicle to her nephew. Amine B., already known to police, was subsequently summoned in turn. He never appeared — neither at the police station nor before the courts.
On 20 May, police officers went to his home in Nanterre to attempt to arrest him. The flat was empty. Since then, Amine B. has been considered on the run and is the subject of active investigation.
A statement by Mounia Merzouk overtaken by events
In 2024, during a public address in Nanterre, Mounia Merzouk had made a remark that remained in people's memories: "Refusals to stop — who doesn't do that in their life!" This statement, perceived as provocative, had provoked outcry on social media and in the political sphere.
Two years later, it is her own car that finds itself involved in such an incident, and it is her own nephew who is fleeing the police. Refusal to stop is precisely the type of offence that cost Nahel his life during the traffic stop in June 2023.
The case revives debate over the normalisation of this offence, which is responsible for several deaths each year on French roads. Amine B. remains at large. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
