The La France insoumise (LFI) deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône Sébastien Delogu was held in police custody on Thursday 27 August, the Marseille public prosecutor's office announced, according to France Info. The measure followed an altercation that occurred three days earlier with three police officers in the building where the parliamentarian resides.
Police custody was released shortly before 11 p.m. His lawyer, Yones Taguelmint, confirmed his client's release in a brief statement to AFP: "Police custody has been lifted. We will not make a statement this evening." He also specified that Sébastien Delogu has been summoned to court for contempt, scheduled for 13 November. The deputy for his part posted a terse message on Instagram—a white heart on a black background accompanied by the words "All is well".
Conflicting Accounts of Events
The altercation on Monday began when plain-clothes police officers presented themselves at Sébastien Delogu's building to arrest a man suspected of stealing a watch. The accounts of the two parties diverge over how events unfolded.
The deputy claims that the officers did not identify themselves and accuses them of insulting him. He also asserts that one of them struck him "on the chest". The three police officers for their part filed a complaint for "contempt of persons vested with public authority", contending that Sébastien Delogu had physically resisted their entry into the premises and had insulted them. Reciprocal complaints were thus registered by both parties.
The man sought by police was eventually arrested in an apartment located across from the deputy's.
Interior Minister Offers Support to Law Enforcement
The Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, responded on Wednesday on social network X. He offered his "support to law enforcement" whilst emphasising that the investigation should establish the exact circumstances of the altercation. An investigation has been opened to determine each party's responsibilities.
