Jewellery valued at approximately 4.5 million euros, equivalent to around 109 million Czech crowns, was stolen on Sunday during a lightning raid on a museum located in a small commune in eastern France. The establishment showcases works by René Lalique, a French jeweller, glassmaker and Art nouveau designer.
The perpetrators carried out their operation swiftly before fleeing with the stolen goods. Authorities did not immediately provide details on the number of burglars involved or whether any arrests had been made.
The museum, located in a rural area, is dedicated to the work of Lalique, a major figure in French decorative art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The stolen items represent considerable value, placing this theft amongst the most significant heists committed against French cultural institutions in recent years.
The matter was revealed by news agency AFP, citing sources close to the investigation and the competent prosecutor's office.
