On Monday 16 February, the Pointe-à-Pitre court handed down sentences against two individuals aged 20 and 21 who were caught red-handed transporting prohibited goods by air above Fond-Sarail detention centre in Baie-Mahault.
The matter began on 13 February, when law enforcement spotted a flying device and then traced its trajectory back to its operator. During the intervention, military personnel discovered approximately five hundred grammes of cannabis, a gaming console controller as well as alcoholic beverages, all prepared to be parachuted into the prison courtyard. The investigation resulted in the seizure of two flying devices in total.
Analysis of digital traces revealed the scale of the trafficking: during the period from November 2025 to February 2026, twenty-seven night-time operations took place, resulting in the dropping of one hundred and fifty-four packages inside the walls of the facility. Prison staff representatives had previously raised the alarm about this problem.
Questioning established that the two convicted men, with no previous criminal records, had been approached via masked accounts on the internet. The flights are believed to have been planned by a resident of Montpellier who manages an illegal trafficking operation of this kind targeting several prisons in mainland France. This presumed recruiter reportedly even travelled to the island to personally hand over the equipment used.
Although they denied knowing his identity, the two defendants received identical sentences: twenty-four months' imprisonment of which twelve months are suspended with a probationary period of two years. They remain in custody pending possible placement under electronic monitoring.
