The fire that broke out in the Fontainebleau massif has already consumed 1,300 hectares of vegetation, according to statements by the Minister of the Interior on France 2. Two separate fire sources have been identified: one devastated 1,200 hectares, the other approximately 100 hectares.
Investigators apprehended two people suspected of starting these fires. At the national level, police services arrested 59 individuals, accused of causing fires to break out, either deliberately or through negligence. This group includes 30 adults and 29 minors, with highly varied profiles.
Among these arrests, seven suspects were remanded in custody provisionally. These detainees admitted to deliberately setting the fires, the minister specified.
According to information gathered by TF1/LCI, interrogations and custody procedures are still ongoing following the appearance of a second fire source near Fontainebleau. Investigation into the cause of the first fire's outbreak is also continuing, according to a source close to the case.
Approximately 700 firefighters are still deployed to attempt to contain the flames. "It is shock. Sadness and anger. The Fontainebleau forest is going up in smoke before our eyes," declared Marine Tondelier, national head of Europe Écologie Les Verts. The elected official condemned the conjunction of "human stupidity", exceptional drought and high temperatures. She also warned that the assessment of unpreparedness in the face of these disasters would be "severe".
