The Alès correctional tribunal ruled on Friday on a series of eight burglaries dating from 2016. The defendant, a 38-year-old man with a heavy criminal record, received a custodial sentence.
Zouhir A. appeared from Seysses prison, where he is currently detained, via a video link. The magistrates accused him of burglaries with forcible entry committed in Alès and neighbouring municipalities between June and August 2016. During searches, law enforcement found part of the stolen goods at a relative's address: multimedia devices, spectacles, watches, jewellery and bags.
The public prosecutor, Abdelkrim Grini, emphasised the seriousness of these offences despite their age. He recalled that the case concerns an individual with a criminal record marked by eleven convictions, five of which are for theft. He demanded three years' imprisonment with a remand order.
The defence counsel, Ms Sophie Bonnaud, argued for partial acquittal. She highlighted that her client admitted to five of the eight charges and had consistently denied acting as an accomplice. She also noted that he had already spent ten months in pre-trial detention in this case.
The tribunal ultimately imposed an 18-month custodial sentence together with a remand order.
