During the night of 5 to 6 July, nearly a dozen criminal fires were started in the department of Hérault, particularly in the surrounding areas of Alignan-du-Vent and Abeilhan. Gendarmes from Pézenas have been deployed to find the individual responsible for these numerous fire outbreaks.
Tension was already high on the fire front. On Sunday 5 July, approximately one thousand firefighters had to respond to more than 30 different fires, whilst the department was already on maximum alert for forest fire risks. The director of Sdis 34, Contrôleur Général Éric Florès, called on local officials to free their employees who are volunteer firefighters, in order to avoid any shortage of resources in the face of the announced weather conditions. Prefect Chantal Mauchet visited the emergency services to assess the situation.
From a legal standpoint, anyone who deliberately sets fire faces two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros. If people are injured, the sentence can rise to ten years imprisonment.
