Femicide in Martigues: 58 knife wounds, partner in his forties sent for examination

According to sudouest.fr, a 25-year-old woman was killed with 58 knife wounds in Martigues, in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Her partner, aged 40, was presented on Wednesday to an investigating judge as part of judicial proceedings opened for "wilful homicide of a spouse". The Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor's office requested his remand in custody.

The victim was discovered on Monday by emergency services in an apartment in the town, on the floor and unconscious. She presented, according to the prosecutor's office, "several bleeding wounds on the upper parts of the body". The autopsy established "58 wounds consistent with the use of a pointed or sharp instrument, the majority located on the torso, head and neck, consistent with the intervention of a third party".

The partner was present when emergency services arrived. He stated spontaneously that he found his partner "unconscious and covered in blood" when he returned from work, and that he had alerted his neighbours to obtain help. Placed in police custody immediately, he was referred on Wednesday before the investigating judge. He denies being "the author of this homicide", indicates the Prosecutor of the Republic Jean-Luc Blachon in a statement.

These facts are part of a concerning context. According to the latest official figures published in October, the number of spousal femicides increased by 11 per cent between 2023 and 2024, bringing to 107 the number of women killed by their spouse or ex-spouse. The Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez had then described the situation as "unbearable", assuring that the mobilisation of law enforcement was "total".
