Charged with femicide after turning himself in to gendarmes
A 68-year-old man was charged on Thursday 20 August with the murder of his 69-year-old partner, who was strangled on 18 August at their shared home in Sanguinet, in the Landes, reports Google News FR — Crime (fr) based on information gathered from the Mont-de-Marsan prosecutor's office.
The victim was found dead at her home on Tuesday. Her partner, who had himself contacted the gendarmes to turn himself in, was arrested on the spot.
Charged with murder by spouse, the suspect "remained silent" before the investigating magistrate, according to deputy prosecutor Aurélie Hemonet. He was remanded in custody, in line with the prosecution's requests.
An examination of the body established that death resulted from "neurological and cardiorespiratory failure in the context of mechanical cervical compression during manual strangulation," the magistrate specified.
In 2024, 107 women were killed by their spouse or ex-spouse, compared to 96 in 2023, representing an 11 per cent increase, according to the latest data from the Inter-ministerial Mission for the Protection of Women (Miprof).
