Paris assizes court delivered its verdict on Friday 10 July 2026. Lakhdar Matoug, 53, has been sentenced to 27 years' imprisonment for killing his wife Assia, 36, then dismembering her body before concealing pieces of it in the Buttes-Chaumont park and in Bobigny. The sentence corresponds to the recommendations made by the attorney general, according to franceinfo.
The events date back to late January 2023. The defendant claims that a marital dispute went wrong. He states he strangled his wife in a matter of seconds, but forensic experts believe the strangulation lasted several minutes. After her death, he lay the corpse on the sofa and told the children not to disturb "mum, who is tired and ill".
The following day, he went to a DIY shop in south-east Paris to purchase an angle grinder. He then severed his wife's body. The remains were placed in plastic bags and scattered amongst the vegetable waste at Buttes-Chaumont. The torso was transported to Bobigny to be dumped in a waste ground.
The defence argued a phenomenon of "derealisation" and "psychic dissociation". The attorney general rejected these arguments, emphasising the premeditated purchase of the tool, the multiple trips between Montreuil and the park, the report of the disappearance to the authorities, the messages sent to the deceased wife and the confessions obtained during the third police custody period, fifteen days after the events.
