Around 100 gendarmes are carrying out a search at the home of Jérôme Barela, in the Gers department in France, the man considered the main suspect in the murder of 11-year-old Lianna, according to information from AFP from a source close to the investigation confirming a report by BFMTV.
The massive presence of police forces underscores the seriousness of the case and the scale of ongoing investigations to gather new evidence.
The death and abuse suffered by the minor provoked strong public outrage in France. Lianna disappeared in late May and was found dead on 4 June, inside an abandoned agricultural silo in the commune of Puycasquier in the Gers.
The incident triggered a wave of anger and reactions, with a report noting serious malfunctions in the functioning of the justice system in this case.
The autopsy clearly revealed that the 11-year-old girl had been a victim of sexual abuse. In the child's genitals, the DNA of the main suspect, Jérôme Barela, 41 years old, was detected, linking him directly to the crime.
The presence of Jérôme Barela's DNA was detected "at various places on the victim's body and clothing", according to the gendarmerie.
Furthermore, the child's body showed bruising, the most visible being on the left temple. The investigation also revealed that the minor had been gagged with adhesive tape by the perpetrator.
Despite the horrific nature of these findings, the autopsy has not yet determined the exact cause of Lianna's death. Investigators note that the final forensic medical report will be delayed by several weeks due to ongoing specialist analyses.
Regarding the legal proceedings, Jérôme Barela had been initially arrested on charges of abduction and unlawful detention of a minor under 15 years of age, three days after the girl's disappearance.
When presented before the investigating judge, the man in his forties chose complete silence. He refused to answer any questions and is now being held in solitary confinement at Mont-de-Marsan prison.
This decision was made to prevent any contact with other inmates, as he is considered likely to be threatened or assaulted due to the nature of the case. At the same time, prison services are closely monitoring his psychological state, fearing he may attempt suicide.
