Optical fraud in Paris: 22 people to be tried in 2027 for embezzlement of millions
A fraud scheme orchestrated between opticians, ophthalmologists and patients defrauded social security and mutual insurance schemes of several million euros.

Twenty-two people will be tried in spring 2027 for orchestrating a massive fraud in the optical sector in the Paris region, announced the Paris prosecutor's office on Friday 25 September 2026. According to actu.fr, among those implicated are several opticians, ophthalmologists and presidents of health associations.
The defendants are accused of fraud and money laundering as part of an organised gang. A three-way pact between insured persons, opticians and prescribers is believed to have been put in place since 2023 in Paris and the inner suburbs, away from monitoring authorities.
The objective of the scheme, according to prosecutor Laure Beccuau, was to achieve "maximum coverage by mutual insurance schemes". Each party to the trio benefited from the arrangement: customers received a credit allowance to purchase optical products, including "luxury frames"; opticians improved their margins through an "increased and unfair attractiveness"; ophthalmologists, at the top of the chain, were guaranteed an "abundant patient base", particularly sought after by health centres diverted from their status as non-profit associations.
This scheme was uncovered thanks to reports from several mutual insurance schemes. A preliminary investigation was opened in 2025, followed by raids conducted between January and July 2026 in ophthalmology surgeries, health centres and opticians' premises. The damage estimated by investigators amounts to "several million euros", primarily affecting mutual insurance schemes, according to the prosecutor's office.
The individuals prosecuted face up to ten years' imprisonment. Optical equipment valued at €1.3 million is also at stake in this case.
