Three couples of entrepreneurs from the Territoire de Belfort were tried for creating forged documents in order to illegally claim public benefits over a five-year period.
Social-benefit fraud: six Belfort merchants sentenced by courts
The Belfort court handed down its decision on 2 June in a case of fraud involving social benefits. Six business owners, forming three couples, were prosecuted for unlawful financial schemes carried out between 2016 and 2021.
The defendants used various commercial structures to develop their scheme. Some of these entities had moreover disappeared due to a cessation of business pronounced by the courts during this period. The mechanism was based on the production of numerous counterfeit documents: invoices with artificially inflated amounts as well as fabricated wage slips.
This documentary fraud was intended to deceive solidarity organisations and obtain payments to which the accused were not entitled. The case, particularly voluminous, necessitated examination of a substantial quantity of documents by the judiciary.
The convictions handed down by the tribunal aimed to punish these misappropriations of public funds and to deter such conduct in the local business community.
