Three people in their twenties were hit by gunfire during the night of Saturday to Sunday, just after 4 a.m., in the heart of Caen's town centre. The incident occurred near Place Jean-Letellier, in the Quatrans district, at the foot of the castle.
According to information gathered by ici.fr and confirmed by France 3 Régions, a man driving a BMW is believed to have carried out a drive-by shooting, firing several projectiles at a Peugeot 208 in which five people were seated. The shots were fired from the driver's side of the targeted vehicle.
The toll stands at two young women and one man injured. Two of them were seriously struck by bullets, whilst a third victim was more lightly struck by glass fragments. The driver of the targeted car transported the wounded to the emergency department of Caen University Hospital, where they were treated.
The gunman managed to flee. The national police launched a search operation to locate him. The Public Prosecutor for Caen, Joël Garrigue, confirmed that investigations were underway. Forensic and technical police teams were still on site on Sunday midday to conduct ballistic examinations and inspect the targeted vehicle.
Witness interviews have already begun in order to shed full light on the exact circumstances of this attack. The context of the incident remains undetermined for now.
