Shooting in Plourin-lès-Morlaix: woman killed, gunman airlifted in critical condition
A gunman shot dead a woman in her sixties and wounded her partner on Friday in Plourin-lès-Morlaix, Finistère. The suspected perpetrator, a neighbour, was hospitalised in very critical condition.

An armed man barricaded himself on Friday 4 September in a building on rue Pierre-Grall in Plourin-lès-Morlaix, Finistère, after killing a woman in her sixties and wounding her partner, according to midilibre.fr. A major police operation mobilised around 50 gendarmes in this residential neighbourhood for several hours.
Gunshots heard "a few minutes apart" triggered the intervention of law enforcement. The victim, a woman in her sixties, could not be saved. Her partner, aged around 55, "was shot at in turn when he arrived on the scene", authorities stated. At the end of the day, public prosecutor Stéphane Kellenberger announced that the wounded man, although "seriously injured", "appeared to be out of medical danger".
The suspected assailant, himself around fifty years old, was "apparently" a neighbour of the victims, according to the Brest prosecutor's office. He had lived in the commune "for seven or eight years", specified mayor Guy Pennec to Ouest-France. According to his account, the man was not "known for his dangerousness".
The Nantes unit of the GIGN was sent as reinforcement to conduct negotiations. The gunman had barricaded himself under a stairwell, outside his home, armed with a rifle. Gendarmes eventually found him "unresponsive and armed". He was airlifted around 18:30 to Brest University Hospital in "very critical" condition, the prosecutor stated. He presented "a head wound" suggesting "on his part an attempted suicide".
Several residents had been evacuated for their safety during the operation. A psychological support unit was put in place. An investigation for murder and attempted murder was opened.
