It is 11 p.m. when lookouts posted at the dealing points in Bellefontaine signal the arrival of a scooter carrying two armed men. One is carrying an assault rifle of the Kalashnikov type, the other a 9mm calibre pistol. Witnesses present near the buildings attempt to flee. The attackers nevertheless immediately identify their target and fire several times at Zakaria. One of the shooters then returns to the victim lying on the ground to finish him off with his pistol — seven additional shots ring out before the two-wheeler flees at high speed.
Emergency services and law enforcement, alerted by residents, arrive quickly at the scene. Zakaria succumbs to his wounds upon their arrival. An investigation has been opened on the charge of murder in an organised gang and entrusted to the Central Directorate of Operations and Security (DCOS), the prosecutor's office indicates.
Additional checks are underway to formally confirm the victim's identity, although investigators identify him as Zakaria.
Two territorial wars, the same deadly spiral
Zakaria's death comes just fifteen days after that of Brahim, killed in similar circumstances in Toulouse's housing estates. The two cases nonetheless appear to correspond to distinct disputes, according to initial investigative hypotheses. Tuesday's shooting could also be linked to an armed incident that occurred earlier in the same week.
In the background, two territorial conflicts are fuelling the violence. On one side, a territorial war opposes the networks of the La Reynerie and Bellefontaine neighbourhoods. On the other, a separate conflict is raging in La Faourette. "The number of shooting injuries recorded in recent months is causing the utmost concern to law enforcement," indicates a source close to the case.
Police officers call for reinforcements from Paris
Since the start of the year, armed confrontations have been multiplying in the sensitive neighbourhoods of Haute-Garonne.
