Burst gunfire in the Aiguelongue district, national police open investigation
According to Google News FR — Crime (fr), gunshots were heard on Sunday 23 August 2026 at around 4pm on Rue de Montasinos, in the Aiguelongue district, on the northern outskirts of Montpellier. Initial information gathered at the scene indicates no victims.
It was passers-by and neighbours who alerted emergency services by calling 17, after hearing what they described as "burst gunfire". The national police of Hérault (DIPN 34) stated to France 3 that no eyewitness to the incident was identified.
Officers dispatched to the scene noted around fifteen bullet impacts on a wall. No shell casings were found on the ground. Inspectors from the SLPJ (Local judicial police service) were still present in the afternoon attempting to gather evidence.
The area remains accessible, with the exception of the immediate vicinity of the site, where investigations were continuing. The Aiguelongue district is identified as having several drug dealing points; the investigation will need to establish whether there is a link between the shooting and these drug-trafficking activities.
