Shooting in Plourin-lès-Morlaix: one victim dead, gunman barricaded

A woman died and at least one person was wounded on Friday 4 September in Plourin-lès-Morlaix (Finistère), after gunshots alerted emergency services to a building on rue Pierre Grall. According to fr.news.yahoo.com, a large-scale police operation is under way at the scene.

The public prosecutor of Brest, Stéphane Kellenberger, specified in a statement that gendarmes and emergency services had intervened "urgently following gunshots that had been reported to them". Two shots had initially been mentioned, then a third.

The deceased victim and the injured person — who is believed to be her son, according to a source close to the inquiry — are "apparently neighbours of the suspect", Kellenberger indicated. The gunman is in his fifties. An investigation has been opened on the spot for murder and attempted murder.

The fate of the suspect remains uncertain. "Following the third gunshot, it was reported that this suspect would be unconscious, which remains to be confirmed", the prosecutor declared.

Fifty gendarmes and three negotiators are currently deployed at the scene, according to a gendarmerie source. Three surveillance and intervention squads are mobilised in Châteaulin, Landerneau and in the Plourin-lès-Morlaix district. The area is "sealed off and placed under police control", the Finistère prefecture indicated on social media platform X.

The prefecture is calling on the public to "absolutely avoid the area" and not to overload telephone lines. The municipality of Plourin-lès-Morlaix for its part asked residents to "strictly follow police instructions and not to hinder their operations", via a Facebook post. A medical and psychological support unit has been set up for those who feel they need it, the municipality added.
