The criminal court in Saintes handed down a supplementary sentence of six months' imprisonment on Thursday 4 June against an inmate at Bédenac penitentiary, according to sudouest.fr. The man, aged 42, has been serving a sentence for murder since he was 29.
During a search of his cell, prison officers discovered an unauthorised mobile phone. The man also had access to a computer, which he was officially permitted to use to pursue a law degree. Examination of both devices led the prison director to report photographs and videos of a child sexual abuse nature, described as "unbearable".
The defendant argued that this content had been viewed and downloaded by other inmates to whom he had lent his equipment. The court rejected this argument. It is further established that the man had previously been convicted in 2007 for inappropriate conduct towards children.
On the merits, the court found that the evidence relating to child sexual abuse material was not sufficient to establish his direct responsibility, thus giving him the benefit of the doubt on this charge. However, the concealment of the phone was upheld, resulting in an additional six months' imprisonment being added to his sentence. His release date, originally scheduled for 2028, has now been postponed.
