The criminal court in Digne-les-Bains (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) has sentenced to two years' imprisonment the man who set fire to the secondary residence of the grandparents of young Émile Soleil, according to Le Figaro.
Anne and Philippe Vedovini, the child's grandparents, attended the hearing as civil parties — an unexpected presence, their lawyers having previously suggested they would not participate. Dressed soberly, the couple took their seats in the front row of the courtroom on Tuesday afternoon.
The defendant justified his action by stating his desire to relaunch the investigation into the boy's disappearance. "It's the only thing I found to get the investigation moving again," he allegedly stated. Isabelle Colombani, lawyer for Anne Vedovini, clarified that it was her client who insisted on being present at the trial.
The disappearance of Émile Soleil, which occurred three years ago in the hamlet of Haut-Vernet, gave rise to multiple derailments on the margins of the official investigation. The fire at the family home illustrates, according to Le Figaro, another form of violence inherent to this case: that of personal certainties and parallel justice systems that have developed around it.
The funeral of young Émile took place on 8 February 2025. The Vedovinis rarely expose themselves publicly, except when circumstances compel them to do so.
